A few weeks ago, I met SF’s elected public defender Jeff Adachi at an informal gathering of a few local filmmakers I organized. I knew he had just premiered his film “Defender” at the San Francisco International Film Festival (SFIFF) so it was a long shot that he would take time out of his hellish schedule to our rinky-dink meet-up. But there he was. He came because he said he was once a struggling indie filmmaker trying to make social justice films (for the past 10 years and 6 films!) and wanted to support us. He encouraged us to band together and share resources. And to never give up.
