  1. The Imperfect Is Perfect: The Tenderloin

    SFUFF 2017 / 150 mins
    Catch a rare screening of the film “Drugs in the Tenderloin” and witness stories of people flocking to the Tenderloin for sanctuary starting in the early 60s (even before the Summer of Love which was centered in the Haight/Ashbury District). The second film, "Tender Souls", about three Tenderloin residents current stories of struggle and redemption, makes us reflect on our own fragility and strength. The Tenderloin Museum, as the film screening venue is appropo, as under the direction of Katie Conry, its exhibits bring the neighborhood’s history to life to bring greater appreciation of how the area has changed and yet not changed at all. Film screening followed by discussion with the Director of Tenderloin Museum and Robert Zagone, “Drugs in the Tenderloin” filmmaker. All ticket proceeds go to fund the Tenderloin Museum.

  2. In the Wake of Ghost Ship

    Last December, Oakland’s Ghost Ship warehouse fire claimed 36 lives, the nation’s deadliest fire in over a decade. It also set off a wave of scrutiny of live/work spaces across the country. Seven miles from Ghost Ship, a legendary punk collective called Burnt Ramen is fighting back against sudden eviction. This short film won the Golden Gate Award for Best Short Film at the 2017 San Francisco International Film Festival.

  3. The Lot

    Grady, a lonely café owner, encounters Christian, a new boy in town shunned by the local kids, when he finds him attempting to build a playhouse on the empty lot across the street. An unlikely friendship grows while Grady steps in to help and teach Christian, through the action of building a park in the empty lot. As they encounter challenges along the way, their relationship is put to the test and Grady must come to grips with a change within himself.

  5. The Mural

    This film follows the stories of several artists with developmental disabilities working with the non-profit The Arc San Francisco and civic artists from Free Space to paint a wall-sized mural that aims to erase barriers. The film explores the unlimited nature of art and its capacity to express freedom, even for those individuals whose lives seem to be confined to the boundaries of their disabilities.

    Awkward spaces in-between freeways, mysterious empty lots, and remote rooftops, capture your imagination as no man’s land, but the films and panelists will reveal a more complex story of careful planning, close collaboration and shared values contributing to productive places.   7. No Vacancy

    “No Vacancy” chronicles the experiences of local artists who strive to live in San Francisco while facing economic challenges and threat of eviction. Profiled artists include two who were part of a group of artists recently evicted from the art studio in the “Beast on Bryant” building, now being developed for new housing.
